A Good Look at Bad Language)

Heheh!

Fact: Around 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Fact: More than 7 out of 10 children are cured – nearly 3 out of 10 children die.

Fact: Nearly 25% of childhood deaths are caused by cancer. Of all childhood cancers, leukaemia is the biggest killer.

Fact: We don’t like to talk about death – particularly the death of children.
Fact: We don’t like facing facts.

But Sam does!
From Sam and the rich cast of characters we learn not only what it’s like to have cancer but also how people react to terminally ill children: the almost suffocating concern of his Mum, the denial of the situation of his Dad, the everyday ordinariness of eight-year-old sister Ella who cannot understand why Sam gets special attention, and the no-nonsense Grandma, whose down-to-earth approach consistently reassures everyone.

We owe it to our children to talk about the facts of dying – and not just in the context of badgers or elderly relatives. Children aren’t afraid of the facts, and nor should we be. Sally Nicholls has made a brilliant start at addressing what should not be a taboo subject in the world of children’s books.

Sam penasaran tentang hantu dan UFO---dan kematian. Sam mengidap leukemia.

Have we always "sworn like sailors"? Has creative cursing developed because we can't just slug people when they make us angry? And if such verbal aggression is universal, why is it that some languages (Japanese, for instance) supposedly do not contain any nasty words? Throughout the twentieth century there seems to have been a dramatic escalation in the use and acceptance of offensive language in English, both verbally and in print. Today it seems almost commonplace to hear the "f" word in casual conversation, and even on television. Just how have we become such a bunch of cursers and what does it tell us about our language and ourselves?

I use this book in my first year of teaching art class. It's very useful and handy. The author gave a lot of study cases and how to handle certain situations.

An inspiring and comprehensive guide to art education.

In this accessibly written guide for classroom and art teachers as well as parents, Nancy Beal shows how to release children's marvelous gifts of expression. Beal believes that children must first of all be comfortable with their materials. She focuses on six basic media: collage, drawing, painting, clay, printmaking, and construction. She gives practical consideration to all facets of a teacher's responsibility: how each material should be introduced; what supplies are best; how a classroom may be set up to support children's explorations; and how teachers may ask open-ed questions to stimulate personal and meaningful expression. Beal also discusses how to integrate art into social studies and how to make museum visits productive and fun. Each chapter includes a section specifically for parents on helping their children create art at home.

Beal has taught art to children for twenty-five years and is able to draw on a wealth of examples from her classroom. The Art of Teaching Art to Children is extensively illustrated with her students' art, visual proof of her gifts as an educator and art enthusiast.
